Curators Notes

Discover the storied legacy of silver-plated flatware. Originating in the 19th century, silver-plating revolutionized dining etiquette, offering an affordable yet elegant alternative to sterling silver. With intricate designs and superior craftsmanship, silver-plated flatware adorned tables of the affluent and became a staple in households worldwide. Today, it continues to evoke a sense of sophistication and tradition, making it a cherished addition to any dining experience.

Flatware is made in sizes known as continental, place, and luncheon. Continental flatware is the longest length, also known as European size. Continental flatware is generally a half-inch longer than place-size flatware and an inch longer than luncheon size. Standard refers the sizes of flatware commonly used with American table settings. However, for a more formal look, the “continental” flatware sizes (also referred to as “dinner” sizes) are larger and heavier than the standard. These are usually found in European flatware collections.
